CU Boulder Wardenburg Health Counseling and Psychiatric Services | CAPS

The University of Colorado Boulder offers substance abuse counseling and therapy to students with drug and alcohol abuse issues at the Wardenburg Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services center (CAPS).The Wardenburg Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services center (CAPS) has a robust staff of addiction psychiatrists, social workers, addiction counselors, therapists, nurse practitioners and others trained and experienced in helping students overcome their addiction and substance abuse issues. Each fee paying University of Colorado student is entitled to 6 free drug and alcohol counseling sessions each academic year at the CAPS center.According to the Wardenburg Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services center (CAPS) website the services offered are:

  • Walk-in services at either location; M - F, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Individual and couples counseling
  • Groups and workshops
  • Psychiatric medical evaluation and medication management
  • Substance use counseling and educational services
  • Psychological testing
  • Consultation and community outreach
  • Academic support and personal wellness programming
  • Training opportunities

According to the CAPS website, Wardenburg Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services center does not offer substance abuse specific groups. The CAPS program does offer individual therapy and psychiatry aimed at educating students and helping to connect students with substance abuse issues with additional resources in the community such as inpatient treatment and residential treatment programs, sober living homes and intensive outpatient programs (IOP).CAPS is an excellent resource for students at the University of Colorado who are struggling with a substance abuse issue. The caring and competent staff at the Wardenburg Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services Center can help to provide students a thorough assessment and referral to a higher level of care if needed.In the event that a student needs a higher level of care than CAPS is able to offer, NorthStar Transitions, a licensed and Joint Commission accredited substance abuse treatment center in Boulder, Colorado is able to accommodate the substance abuse treatment needs of CU Boulder students. NorthStar Transitions offers day treatment, intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) and through a partnership with NorthStar Sober Living, LLC, sober living homes within walking distance of the University of Colorado campus. NorthStar Transitions is in-network with the CU Gold Student Health Insurance Plan.
