Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is a form of group therapy that meets three times per week for 3 hours per group. Clients participating in Intensive Outpatient (IOP) also participate in weekly individual and family therapy and regular drug and alcohol testing. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs typically last from 8-12 weeks. After Intensive Outpatient is completed, clients stop attending IOP groups and continue on with outpatient therapy and testing only.

NorthStar Transitions Denver Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program focuses on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) as well as relapse prevention skills, neuroscience and biology of addiction and life skills. Each IOP group typically starts with a check-in followed by the therapist introducing a topic or skill, the topic is discussed or the skill is practiced, then there is a closing of the group.
