Our Denver and Boulder rehab is a safe harbor designed to restore and empower the personal and family lives disrupted by substance misuse and addiction. However, if drug and alcohol dependency masks a co-occurring condition, the restorative effects of rehab may be short-lived. Underlying mental and personality disorders continue to trigger relapse and waylay even the most earnest commitment to recovery.
Dual Diagnosis Disorders
Symptoms of addiction are similar to the beginning signs of mental illness. Both conditions may begin in the teen years when it is common for young people to distance themselves from family and experiment with risky behaviors. In other cases, adults develop late-onset disorders and begin using drugs or alcohol to numb the pain or manage the symptoms of a dual diagnosis. Once drug and alcohol misuse is recognized, it becomes the focus of family, friends and even some professionals, and other behavioral causes are overlooked. However, unless underlying illnesses are treated at the same time as addiction, a cycle of recovery and relapse may begin. Complete recovery depends on simultaneous treatment for addiction and these dual-diagnosis conditions:
- Mental illness
- Panic disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia & other personality disorders
- Extreme anxiety
- PTSD (post-traumatic distress syndrome)
- Obsessive-compulsive behaviors
- Eating disorders
On-Site Licensed Clinical Staff
Upon admission to NorthStar Transitions rehab programs, clients are evaluated for co-occurring disorders that may contribute to dependency. On our staff are highly trained addiction professionals, including a board-certified addiction psychiatrist. For most dual-diagnosis evaluations, the NorthStar clinical team manages medication and provides necessary therapy. When a co-occurring disorder or illness is outside our scope of practice, a client is referred to a qualified area specialist for treatment.
Case Management for Dual Diagnosis
When dual diagnosis is part of an individual’s rehabilitation and recovery, special attention to consistent medical and psychiatric treatment is necessary. The continuum of care at NorthStar Transitions provides the extra support individuals with co-occurring conditions need to succeed at living a full, productive and sober life. NorthStar clients are assigned a case manager who works with them to set and manage goals, establish healthy and consistent habits, and confirm that dual-diagnosis appointments are kept and necessary medication is correctly taken.
