NorthStar Transitions offers an extensive experiential therapy and wellness program to clients enrolled in addiction treatment services. The experiential therapy and wellness program is on-going throughout all levels of care (residential-outpatient).
The Benefits of Experiential Therapy
Experiential therapy is designed to take clients out of their element and get them to engage with their peers and therapist through authentic interactions that may not otherwise happen in traditional group therapy. Experiential therapy breaks down a client’s walls and allows them to practice a skill or learn a concept through an experience rather than a facilitated group or lecture.
An example of experiential therapy would be an exercise such as indoor rock climbing. During this activity, clients may utilize skills such as:
- Asking for help
- Persevering through fear
- Providing positive feedback
- Listening to positive feedback
- Relying on others.
During and after each experiential therapy activity, clients process the activity with the therapist facilitating the exercise and the other group participants. Processing the activity allows clients the opportunity to further highlight and discuss the concepts and skills being learned and to learn from each others experience and insights.
Examples of experiential therapy activities at NorthStar include:
- Indoor rock climbing
- Guided meditation
- Equine therapy
Health and Wellness
NorthStar Transitions also offers general wellness programming. The purpose of our general wellness program is to help clients develop healthy habits and routines while in addiction treatment. Research has demonstrated that exercise and healthy diet are highly correlated with
- Decreased anxiety and depression
- Decreased cravings for drugs and alcohol
- Increased self-confidence
NorthStar helps to instill exercise and healthy eating habits into its clients lives while they are still in addiction treatment so that they continue to use those tools to help regulate their mood long after they have discharged from treatment.
Examples of wellness activities for NorthStar clients include:
- Gym access for all clients
- Staff facilitated workouts
- Snowboarding (twice weekly trips November-March of each year)
- Skiing (twice weekly trips November-March of each year)
- Staff facilitated hikes
- On-site and off-site yoga classes
- Group meal planning and cooking
- On-site massage (additional fees apply)
Clients in NorthStar’s residential addiction treatment program are required to participate in the wellness program. Clients at Day Treatment, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Outpatient levels of care are encouraged but not required to participate in wellness programming.
